The extended port cover rod is not needed for all .308s. I did not need it for the Aero M5 upper and the 18 inch MI .250 tang rail. There is some movement back and forth but nowhere near the point of it coming out. If I recall correctly the extended rod is only needed for certain makes of .308 rifles, but I don't recall which. Ed to add: I just did another build on the Aero M5 upper and on this particular upper, I DID need the longer ejection port rod. I am unsure how the first one I did had a longer rod with it but the second one I did had a shorter rod. So, check before you complete your build or you might have to break it down again. Not that breaking it down is any hill for a climber but still, better to do it right the first time so double check if you need the longer rod first.
